EA Giving Tuesday

Donation matching initiative

Announcements

  • June 25, 2021: We have published an in-depth retrospective of EA Giving Tuesday 2020 on the Effective Altruism Forum. You can read it here.

  • January 30, 2021: Facebook has now reported Giving Tuesday 2020 match amounts. We estimate that the effective altruism community directed $411,693 in matching funds out of $1,618,724 donated, which implies an overall match percent of 25%. You can find a full breakdown on our donated and matched page.

If you'd like to see the match amounts for your own donations, you can click here from your computer. Or, if you're on a phone, you can open the Facebook app and go to Settings & Privacy > Settings > Facebook Pay > Activity > See All.

While many donations were matched at 10%, the 100% match was extremely competitive in 2020. Because of inconsistencies in processing delays, even some donors who followed our instructions correctly had zero donations matched at 100%.

About EA Giving Tuesday

EA Giving Tuesday organizes people around a shared goal: to direct Facebook’s matching funds to highly effective nonprofits, by donating quickly on Giving Tuesday.

The EA Giving Tuesday team supports both donors and highly effective nonprofits, to make it as easy as possible to participate in this unique matching opportunity.

What were the matching program details this year? Facebook contributed $7 million USD in matching funds, with the first $2 million donations matched at 100%, and (we believe) the next $50 million donations matched at 10%. Facebook matched donations of up to $20,000 USD per donor and $100,000 USD per US nonprofit. The 100% match began on December 1, 2020, at 8:00 am EST, and ended within seconds. We expected that donating fast would be especially important this year, and we implemented new strategies to support donors.

Who organizes EA Giving Tuesday? The EA Giving Tuesday team and Rethink Charity organize this project. EA Giving Tuesday is motivated by effective altruism (EA), and many people in the EA community help us immensely.
